The Supreme Court today ruled that a Dublin woman who claims she was beaten, raped and intimidated by her family would be allowed to take legal action against An Garda Siochána for ignoring her complaints.
The 51-year-old woman claims the abuse by her brother, father and mother was ongoing for 36 years and began when she was six-years-old.
The woman said when she reported the abuse officers at a Dublin garda station told her she must have enjoyed it as she took her seven years to first report it.
At the age of 19 the woman had a child by her brother. He was jailed for 15 years at the Central Criminal Court in 1997 after pleading guilty to unlawful carnal knowledge and sexual assault.
The woman sued the gardaí for damages but the proceedings were struck out on the grounds of delay by the High Court.
Today Ms Justice Susan Denham at the Supreme Court overturned that decision.
