The Green Party's challenge to RTÉ's refusal to provide live television coverage of its ardfheis on March 1st and 2nd will be heard by the High Court today.

Mr Justice Ó Caoimh was told yesterday that the matter was urgent because of the nearness of the ardfheis.

In judicial review proceedings, the party is seeking an order directing RTÉ to give live television coverage to the event.

The Green Party wants coverage comparable to that made available to political parties of "at least equivalent political stature - the Labour Party, Progressive Democrats and Sinn Féin".

RTÉ guidelines stipulate that a political party must have received 5 per cent of the vote and/or have seven TDs before receiving live TV coverage of its ardfheiseanna. The Green Party complained that RTÉ is adhering to those strict guidelines despite the party having six TDs and two MEPs.
