London - An emergency injunction preventing Mr David Shayler, a former MI5 officer, from making any further disclosures was upheld at a private hearing at the High Court yesterday.

Mr Shayler last month revealed that MI5 held secret files on Mr Peter Mandelson, Minister without Portfolio, and Mr Jack Straw, the Home Secretary, among hundreds of thousands it holds on individuals, including musicians, it considered potentially "subversive".

Last weekend the government obtained an injunction from Mr Justice Keene after the Mail on Sunday refused to say what it intended to publish. Mr Justice Hooper yesterday extended the injunction, which also prevents Mr Shayler from further breaches of the undertaking of confidentiality which he signed when he joined MI5 six years ago.
