An inquest at Dublin City Coroner's Court has recommended that the junction of Westmoreland Street and Aston Quay be re-evaluated following the death last year of a cyclist at the busy intersection.

The jury at the inquest also recommended that Dublin Corporation look into the possibility of providing a cycle lane in the area.

Last June, Dr Olivia Potterton, (36), from Phibsboro was killed when a truck turned into her path at the junction of Westmoreland Street and Aston Quay. Today’s inquest found that her death was accidental.

There have been at least 18 other accidents at the busy junction over the past three years.

Dublin Corporation has confirmed that it already has plans to upgrade cycling facilities in Dublin and its plans include putting cycle lanes at the busy junction where Dr Potterton was killed.

The junction of Aston Quay and Westmoreland Street has been identified by Dublin Corporation as a blackspot, especially for pedestrians, and a number of improvements have already been implemented.

These include the renewal of road markings and the installation of a timer at the Aston Quay pedestrian crossing to encourage pedestrians to wait for the green light before crossing.
