Two young men appealing their conviction in relation to the killing of Brian Murphy outside Anabels nightclub in Dublin in 2000 must wait the outcome of judge's deliberations after the Court of Criminal Appeal (CCA) today reserved judgment.
The court today heard counsel for one of the men, Dermot Laide, express his "deep sense of unease" about how the verdict was reached.
Mr Michael O'Higgins SC said his team was "baffled" at his client's conviction in relation to Mr Murphy's death at the nightclub outside the Burlington Hotel on Sussex Road, Dublin, on August 31st, 2000.
Counsel was making closing submissions on the fourth and final day of the appeal by Laide (23), of Rossvale, Castleblayney, Co Monaghan, who is serving a four-year sentence. He received a concurrent two-year sentence when found guilty of violent disorder.
The three-judge CCA reserved judgment on his appeal and that of Desmond Ryan (23), from Cunningham Road, Dalkey, Dublin, who was sentenced to nine months for violent disorder.
Late last year, the CCA rejected an appeal by Sean Mackey (24), of South Park, Foxrock, Dublin, who was jailed for two years when convicted of violent disorder. A fourth accused, Andrew Frame (23), of Nutley Lane, Donnybrook, Dublin, was acquitted of violent disorder.
