A Derry man was charged at the Special Criminal Court last night with the unlawful possession of information likely to be of use in a terrorist offence.
Gerald Anthony McFadden (31), of Rathlin Gardens, Creggan, was charged that on April 15th at Glebe, Donegal town, he had in his possession information relating to Peter Sheridan, an RUC superintendent, and his family and his movements, which was likely to be useful in the commission by members of an unlawful organisation of a serious offence.
Garda Ignatius Cready told the court that on Easter Sunday he arrested Gerald McFadden for a drunken driving offence at 11.10 p.m. When he was brought to Donegal Garda station, McFadden's property was searched, and gardai found a document in a wallet bearing credit cards in his name.
"On this note there was a reference to a superintendent in the RUC and members of his family and movements in relation to that", Garda Cready said.
McFadden was detained for questioning under the Offences Against the State Act. On Monday night, his period of detention was extended, and yesterday evening, at Ballyshannon Garda station, he was re-arrested for the unlawful collection of information contrary to Section 8 of the Offences Against the State (Amendment) Act 1998.
Mr Justice Diarmuid O'Donovan remanded him in custody until next Monday.
