A middle-aged man severed an artery when he fell from a ladder on to a shears while clipping a hedge at the rear of the guest house he ran with his wife, Dublin City Coroner's Court heard yesterday.

Mr James Anthony Brady (53), of Northumberland Lodge, Northumberland Road, Ballsbridge, Dublin, was pronounced dead at St Vincent's Hospital on July 15th last. A post mortem examination showed he had died of shock and haemorrhage having severed an artery in his upper chest area.

Mrs Bridget Brady said she found her husband on the stairs leading from the kitchen into the garden. He was covered in blood. She called a doctor who was staying in the house for help and summoned an ambulance. She added her husband had fallen a year earlier and sustained a wound to his back.

Dr Georgina Perdoma from Orlando, Florida, stated in a deposition that she was staying in the guest house while attending the WONCA conference and assisted Mr Brady in every way she could. He had a chest wound and she found no pulse.
