A murder trial jury was sent to a hotel overnight after failing to reach a verdict in the case of a man accused of murdering another man in Dublin in 2001.

Mr Stephen Kelly (21), of Westpark, Artane, Dublin, is charged with the murder of Mr Jonathan Guy (21), of Belcamp Crescent, Priorswood, outside a house at Newgrove Estate, Donaghmede, Dublin, in March 2001.

The jury continues its deliberations at the Central Criminal Court today.

Three Ballyfermot men have been jailed by Dublin Circuit Criminal Court for their roles in a violent incident in which a man suffered a fractured skull.

Kevin (24) and Kieran (18) Cox, of Cherry Orchard Avenue, were each jailed for a total of four years, with the final year suspended.

They were convicted by a jury last month of assault causing harm and of violent disorder on July 6th, 2001. Kieran Cox was also convicted of criminal damage on the same occasion.

Darren Rogers (19), of Elmdale Park, who pleaded guilty to violent disorder on the same occasion, was jailed for two years, with the final year suspended.

Suspended term for sex abuser

A member of the organisation Nexus, which counsels adult victims of sex abuse, yesterday described as "a joke" a sentence of three years' probation imposed in Derry Crown Court on a man who admitted indecently assaulting three young sisters.

Patrick James Curran (63), of Lettershandoney, Waterside, Derry, admitted committing the offences in his home on six occasions between December 1st, 1968, and May 31st, 1978.

At the time of the offences, the three girls were aged between four years and eight years.

Judge Corinne Philpott told Curran his age saved him from serving a jail sentence.

Northern man remanded in custody

A Northern Ireland man was charged at a special sitting of the Special Criminal Court in Dublin last night with membership of an illegal organisation and possession of ammunition.

Mr Patrick J (PJ) Blair, (47), a native of Newry, Co Down, with an address at Villas One, Muirhevnamore, Dundalk, Co Louth, was remanded in custody until Thursday.

He was charged with membership of an illegal organisation styling itself the Irish Republican Army, otherwise the IRA, otherwise Óglaigh na hÉireann, on Saturday.

He was also charged with the unlawful possession of 17 rounds of ammunition on the same date.

Festival employee held heroin

A Dublin Theatre Festival employee who was asked by a drug dealer to hold heroin valued up to €110,000 has been remanded in custody for sentence on January 22th. Patrick O'Neill (55), of O'Moore Road, Ballyfermot, pleaded guilty to having heroin for supply in the Dublin Circuit Criminal Court.

Bail refused in car bomb case

A man accused of driving a car bomb into Belfast city centre on behalf of the "Real IRA" was refused bail in Belfast High Court yesterday.

Mr Terry McCafferty (34), of Dill House, New Lodge, Belfast, was seen by police parking a blue Orion car outside the motor tax offices at Royston House, Upper Queen Street on November 24th.

The car was found to contain an explosive device.
