Taoiseach Brian Cowen arrived in China this morning to head a trade mission of nearly 100 Irish companies and groups.

Mr Cowen delayed the trip to deal with the growing controversy surrounding the over-70s medical card.

Before leaving last night, Mr Cowen said: “China is the second largest economy in the world and along with the 94 companies travelling to China this week, I want to build on the links between our two countries.

“The aim of this trade mission is to develop and further enhance the significant commercial relationship between Ireland and China; to raise awareness of Ireland as a source of world-class products and services; and to support Irish companies in accessing opportunities within China.”
