The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr Cowen, expressed his "horror and sadness" at the violent end to the Beslan siege.
In a statement he said: "My reaction . . . is one of horror and sadness. I deeply regret that it did not prove possible to bring this crisis to a peaceful end.
"The hostage-takers clearly had no regard for human life. Their actions have served no purpose, other than to bring violence, fear and grief into the everyday lives of ordinary people. These actions must be condemned by all right-thinking people.
"The full details of what happened . . . are not yet available, but it is clear that there are many casualties. The latest reports suggest that dozens may have been killed and hundreds injured. I want to offer my most sincere condolences to the families and friends of those killed, and to the Russian people."
