The Minister for Health, Mr Cowen, was taken to Tullamore General Hospital late on Wednesday night suffering from a respiratory complaint.
A Department of Health spokesman refused to comment beyond acknowledging that the Minister's admission to hospital was unscheduled, and that it was in connection with a respiratory complaint. A hospital spokeswoman said she could not confirm reports that Mr Cowen was in intensive care.
