Crafts exports now worth £25m a year, council report reveals

The Irish crafts industry continues to grow, according to a report commissioned by the Crafts Council of Ireland

The Irish crafts industry continues to grow, according to a report commissioned by the Crafts Council of Ireland. Craft companies estimate the growth to be up to 30 per cent, while retailers estimate growth of between 5 and 15 per cent. Industry turnover for 2000 was £98 million, the council announced at the publication of its annual report yesterday. Crafts exports from the State are valued at £25 million.

The report cites the growth in tourism and the gift market for the increase. Total grants to the non-profit-making organisation increased from £1.5 million in 1999 to £1.9 million last year. Enterprise Ireland's grant rose to £1.2 million from £470,000.

The chairwoman of the council, Dr Frances Ruane, said support from the Government and Enterprise Ireland was crucial to the success of the body's strategic promotional plan. The State-sponsored body has recently shifted its focus toward the promotion rather than the direct selling of Irish craft.

The opening of the Craft Council's national gallery in Kilkenny means there is now a permanent space available for exhibitions. Mr Leslie Reed, chief executive of the council, said the creation of the group's website, www.ccoi.ie was a major development during 2000.
