Meanwhile in Co Limerick two elderly brothers were in a critical condition in hospital last night, after their car was involved in a crash.

Their car and another vehicle collided at about 2.15pm near Herbert’s Pub, Lisnagry, Co Limerick, on the old main Limerick Dublin road.

A passerby said the car landed about 20 metres off the road coming to halt in front of Walsh’s shop.

“I’m shaken up by it. I’ve seen one or two crashes before but this one was a bad one,” the man said.

The two brothers – believed to be aged in their 70s – had to be cut out of their vehicle by firefighters from Limerick after they were trapped in their car.

Three fire engines from Limerick City attended the aftermath of the crash.

The driver of the other vehicle was in a stable condition, having sustained minor injuries. The road was closed for a number of hours while an examination of the scene was carried out.
