Security forces in Northern Ireland searching for the seat of a large explosion heard close to the Belfast to Dublin railway line outside Newry, Co Down, last Wednesday have discovered a track-side crater.

The RUC said today it was estimated to have been caused by a bomb containing 100lbs of homemade explosives and had damaged the track.

The area was reopened tonight after army bomb disposal experts completed a lengthy security operation to ensure no secondary bomb had been left.

Roads in the area around the explosion - Altnaveagh, two miles from Newry - were reopened, but the railway line remained close while engineers from Northern Ireland Railways carried out an assessment of the damage.
