Eamonn Cregan’s four-year reign as Limerick hurling manager has come to an abrupt end with the shock news that he has tendered his resignation.

Rumours circulated within the county late last night that Cregan had made an unexpected decision to resign, reports that were confirmed by the Limerick County Board today.

Speaking to ireland.com, Limerick PRO Denis O'Carroll said: "Eamonn Cregan has resigned as Limerick county hurling manager as of from this morning.

"There will be a meeting of the county management tonight where the resignation will be discussed."

The County Board received a letter of resignation from Cregan this morning.

It is believed Cregan stood down in protest at the County Board’s policy in relation to the playing of dual players.

The Limerick County Board believes players can play for both the hurling and football inter-county teams if they so wish. Cregan, however, opposes that view.

Limerick are currently second in Division 1B of the National Hurling League and will play the winners of the Tipperary v Clare clash in this summer’s Munster championship.
