Gardaí in Cork have appealed to the public for assistance following an aggravated burglary in which a 68-year-old man was knocked unconscious and stabbed after disturbing intruders in his home.
The man returned to his house on the South Douglas Road in Cork city at about 4.15pm where he disturbed a burglar who hit him on the head and stabbed him in the stomach.
The man was knocked unconscious but managed to ring the emergency services when he came to and was taken by ambulance to Cork University Hospital for treatment.
It’s understood the man’s injuries are not life threatening. However, he was badly traumatised by the assault and gardaí are hoping to be in a position to interview him tomorrow (Thurs).
Gardaí cordoned off the scene of the break-in and garda technical officers have begun a forensic examination of the scene in the hope of finding some clues to identify the culprit or culprits.
Gardaí have also begun door-to-door inquiries to see if anyone noticed anything suspicious. They are also checking for CCTV footage in the area that could assist the investigation.
