He is further charged with wasting Garda time by knowingly making false reports and statements, during the same period . Mr McGeever was due to stand trial at Galway Circuit Criminal Court last November but the court was told at the time he had been admitted to Beaumont Hospital the previous day with dangerously high blood pressure which put him in "stroke territory".

The court was told he had mental health issues also and was too ill to attend court.

The matter was adjourned to early December when Tuesday’s trial date was fixed.

However, at Castlebar Circuit Court last Thursday, Mr McGeever's original legal team came off record and Gearoid Geraghty and Co. Solicitors was appointed to represent him.

Judge Rory McCabe vacated Tueday’s trial date in Galway due to the fact the large file involved in the case had just been transferred to the newly appointed legal team.

Mr Geraghty told the court in Galway today that the trial would take four days and that a date in May was acceptable to the prosecution.

Judge MCabe then listed the case for trial on Tuesday, May 26th.
