Man due in court over alleged Co Mayo sex assault on boy

File photograph: Cyril Byrne/The Irish Times Gardaí are preparing to excavate the garden of a house in south Dublin where a woman has alleged two children she gave birth to were murdered and buried.

A man is due to appear at Castlebar District Court charged with a sexual offence against a young boy in an east Mayo town earlier this month.

The suspect has been held at Claremorris Garda station for questioning since he was arrested on Tuesday.

It is understood the alleged victim was attacked in a laneway on Thursday of last week.

The alleged assailant is understood to be in his 70s and to have spent many years living in Britain before coming to live in Ireland.

He has been charged and will appear before Judge Mary Devins at Castlebar District Court on Wednesday.
