A 52-year-old man has been charged with the murder of a Co Donegal man four years ago.

Samuel James Clarke from Magherennan, Raphoe was charged with the murder of Seamus Doherty (67) at his home at Drumacnoo, Churchill on June 17th, 2012.

Mr Clarke appeared at a siting of Buncrana District Court on Thursday before Judge James Faughan.

Detective Inspector Pat O’Donnell told the court Mr Clarke was arrested at his home at 8.55pm on Wednesday and taken to Letterkenny Garda station.

The accused man was charged at 9.44pm. The court was told he replied “no comment” to the charge.

Mr Clarke’s solicitor Donagh Cleary was granted legal aid in the matter and Judge Faughan directed the accused’s medical requirements for painkillers and eyedrops be accommodated in custody.

He remanded Clarke in custody to Harristown District Court tomorrow, Friday January 15 at 10.30am.

A number of the deceased’s relatives, who was a well-respected horse dealer, attended the hearing.
