A man who is wanted in the UK in connection with rape charges was arrested Friday morning in Co Wicklow, the High Court has heard.
Detective Sergeant Sean Fallon told the court he arrested Mr Chukwuemeka Uchenna Okafor on foot of a European Arrest Warrant issued by the British authorities.
At a sitting of the High Court Mr Justice Robert Haughton heard Mr Okafor, a Nigerian man who has been living in Ireland for a couple of years, was arrested this morning at a house in Greystones, Co Wicklow.
Det Sgt Fallon said that following his arrest Mr Okafor was then taken to Greystones Garda Station.
The court heard Mr Okafor is wanted in the UK in connection with an investigation into two rapes which happened in Brighton on the south coast of England more than four years ago.
He is understood to have resided in the Co Wicklow area for a number of years and has a partner here.
The court heard the European Arrest Warrant had previously been endorsed by the High Court in Dublin on May 4th.
A lawyer for Mr Okafor told the court his client was not applying for bail today and the 32-year-old was remanded in custody. The judge adjourned the case to the end of this month.
