Ryanair ground operative settles case over fall on ice

High court told case taken by Karl Smith against Ryanair and DAA can be struck out

A legal action by a Ryanair ground operative over a fall on ice while working at Dublin Airport has been settled.

Karl Smith (56) sued the airline and the Dublin Airport Authority (DAA) claiming his fall on December 10th 2010 and the alleged injuries suffered were a result of negligence.

Mr Smith, of Maple House, Applewood, Swords, Co Dublin, said he struck his head off a concrete bollard after he slipped. He said he lost consciousness for a number of seconds to minutes and suffered severe headaches subsequently.

He claimed he was walking from the staff break room to the security checkpoint along a designated walkway when the accident occurred.

He claimed the walkway should have been cleared of the ice and snow to ensure he had a safe place of work.

The defendants denied the claims and pleaded he took a shortcut which led to the fall.

The case opened in the High Court on Wednesday and Mr Justice Michael Hanna was told, when it resumed on Thursday, the matter could be struck out.
