Man released in connection with death at election party in Bohermore, co Galway

A 52-year-old man has been released from Garda custody without charge, and a file is being sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions, in relation to an incident which resulted in the death of a man at an election party in the early hours of Monday morning.

Liam Horan (60) from Mervue in Galway died in hospital following an altercation at Crowe’s Bar in Bohermore between 2am and 3am.

A man who presented himself at Mill Street Garda station early on Monday morning in connection with the incident was later released without charge.

A file is being prepared for the DPP in relation to the incident, which took place at the public house where post-election celebrations were taking place.

The bar is owned by the Crowe family, two of whom, Ollie and Michael, were re-elected as Fianna Fáil candidates to Galway City Council on Sunday evening.

Candidate The deceased man was the brother of another local election candidate, Jimmy Horan, who was unsuccessful in his effort to be elected as an Independent in the Galway City Central ward.

The State Pathologist, Dr Marie Cassidy, carried out a postmortem on Mr Horan at University Hospital Galway on Monday afternoon.

Funeral arrangements have yet to be announced.
