A pensioner was left with a broken jaw after she was mugged as she walked home, a judge was told yesterday. The woman (78) believed the stress of the incident led to her having a stroke, the court heard.
Alex Parsons (35), Moneymore, Drogheda, Co Louth, pleaded guilty to the robbery on March 29th, 2012, on Constitution Hill, Drogheda.
Dundalk Circuit Court heard the pensioner’s bag was wrapped around her as she walked up Constitution Hill.
She felt a pull on the strap and realised she was being mugged and “was immediately terrified”, Kevin Segrave, prosecuting, said. Parsons pulled so hard on the bag that the woman was “spun around” then “slammed” on to the road.
She was referred to St James’s Hospital because she had a broken jaw. She was also bleeding from her ear and had to receive five stitches .
Judge Michael O’Shea said the woman was subjected to a “horrific ordeal” that was “vicious and violent”. He imposed a 3½-year sentence with the last 12 months suspended.
