A jury at the inquest into the death of a woman who was struck by a Luas on her way to bingo last year has returned a verdict of accidental death and made a number of safety recommendations.
Mother-of-one Ann Marie McQuillan (32), of Bernard Curtis House in Bluebell, Dublin 12, died four days after a tram hit her at the Blackhorse Red Line stop on June 28 last year.
Dublin Coroner’s Court heard she was struck while running across the tracks to catch a tram arriving from the other direction.
The jury today gave a number of safety recommendations, include an increase in warning signage, which would be clearly visible and that there should be a yellow line for passengers to stand behind. The jury also urged a school education programme about safety on the Luas.
Witness Karen Lyons was waiting on the platform at around 8pm when she saw Ms McQuillan dart out in front of the tram.
“She was looking at the Luas coming in the opposite direction,” the witness said.“I don’t think she even saw the Luas that she was struck by.
“It was coming around the bend but she was concentrating on the other Luas and running for that.”
Safety Manager at Veolia Bruno Fualdes told the court a safety barrier was modified following a second incident the following December after there was a “near miss” when a person walked out onto the tracks in front of a Luas.
