Gardaí are investigating a serious assault on a young Wexford woman as she walked home from a Christmas party.

Amy Hayes (27) was attacked on George's Street in Wexford town in the early hours of Sunday morning.

The young retail worker was coming home from a work night out when the assault took place. Ms Hayes was punched and kicked by a male attacker and suffered broken facial bones and extensive bruising.

A Garda spokesman confirmed it is investigating the assault. An incident room has been set up at Wexford Garda Station and investigators are appealing for witnesses to contact them with any information.

“A woman in her late 20s was brought to Wexford General Hospital with non life threatening injuries. No arrests have been made and the investigation is ongoing. Witnesses are asked to contact Wexford Garda Station on 053-9165200.”

It is understood the attack took place near the Abbey Court apartment building at about 3am. A woman living in the building heard Ms Hayes screaming and went to her balcony to see what was happening.

When she saw the assault in progress she screamed at the attacker and he ran off. Gardaí were alerted and Ms Hayes was brought by ambulance to Wexford General Hospital before being transferred to Waterford University Hospital.

It is understood she is conscious and in a stable condition.

The victim’s sister, Gillian Hayes told the Wexford People the attacker “kicked the living daylights” out of her.

“She fought back so hard,” Ms Hayes said. “The fight in her saved her life.”

She cautioned others against walking home alone and appealed for anyone with information to contact Wexford Gardaí.

“We urge anyone who may have witnessed anything or heard anything to reach out to us due to the seriousness of this assault. The attacker is still at large so we would warn anyone walking home alone to beware.”
