Gardaí have arrested one man following the seizure of a large quantity of benzodiazepine tablets found in a vehicle in Dundalk, Co Louth.

An estimated €650,000 worth of suspected benzodiazepine tablets were seized following the search.

At about 5.50pm on Thursday, gardaí from the Dundalk drugs unit stopped and searched a vehicle on Bellewsbridge Road, Dundalk.

During the search gardaí discovered a number of full bin bags, which contained large quantities of benzodiazepine tablets. The exact value of the seizure will be determined following a further analysis.

The driver of the vehicle, a man in his 30s, was arrested at the scene.

He is being detained at Dundalk Garda Station under Section 2 of the Criminal Justice (Drug Trafficking) Act, 1996.

A Garda spokesman said investigations were “ongoing” in the case.
