Gardai warn road users over 'fatal Fridays'

Road-users are being urged to take extra care today as gardaí warn that Friday is the worst day of the week for fatal accidents on Irish roads.

Almost a quarter, or 21 out of the total 91 fatalities, this year happened on a Friday.

Assistant Garda Commissioner Gerard Phillips said that figures indicate that the hours between 2pm and 6pm are the most dangerous for those on the road.

He also reminded people to wear seat-belts, pointing out that eight of the 91 people killed on the roads so far this year had not been doing so.

“This is disappointing as all the research, evidence, and safety campaigns clearly indicate that seatbelts save lives. The use of a seat belt is the most basic form of road safety,” he said.

The number of people who have died on the roads so far this year is two higher than for the same time last year.

Separately a cyclist has died after a collision with a bus in Co Antrim last night.

The incident took place on the Waveney Road in Ballymena shortly before 8.40pm.

The PSNI has appealed to witnesses or anyone with information to contact Ballymena Police station.
