US human rights lawyer  to give lecture

The Law Society of Ireland’s annual human rights lecture will be given by US human rights lawyer Morris Dees at 6.30pm on Wednesday at the Law Society, Blackhall Place, Dublin.

The son of a cotton farmer, Mr Dees studied at Alabama Law School and co-founded the Southern Poverty Law Centre in 1970.

He has received numerous awards for his work in taking human rights cases and is the author of three books.

New date set for surrogacy seminar

The Family Lawyers Association seminar on the law relating to surrogacy, which had to be postponed because of the travel disruption caused by volcanic ash, will now take place in the Distillery Building, Church Street, Dublin, on Wednesday, May 19th, at 5.30pm, chaired by Mr Justice Henry Abbott.

John Weltman, US lawyer and co-founder of Circle Surrogacy in the US, will speak on legal position in relation to surrogacy in the US; Dr Deirdre Madden of UCC will speak on “Does Surrogacy have a future in Ireland?”, Dr Gerard Byrne will speak on “The psychological challenges of surrogacy” and Bronagh O’Hanlon SC will speak on the law relating to surrogacy in Britain.

Financial Regulator sanctions briefing

A breakfast briefing on the Financial Regulator's administrative sanctions procedure will take place at the office of William Fry, Fitzwilton House, Wilton Place, Dublin, at 8am on Wednesday, in conjunction with the Office of the Financial Regulator.

'Human Rights Law Review' for launch

The new annual Human Rights Law Review, edited by Donncha O'Connell and published by Clarus Press, will be launched on Thursday at 5.30pm in the Morrison Hotel, Dublin, by Ombudsman Emily O'Reilly. Donncha O'Connell and Michael Farrell of Free Legal Advice Centres (Flac) will also speak.

Conway book date

A book by Vicky Conway, The Blue Wall of Silence: The Morris Tribunal and Police Accountability in Ireland, will be launched by the president of the High Court, Mr Justice Nicholas Kearns, on June 2nd, in the board room of the school of social sciences and law, 40- 45 Mountjoy Square, Dublin. Irish constitutional reform conference

The Constitutional Studies Group and the school of law UCD are organising a conference on the theme, “Does Ireland need constitutional reform?”, in the Clarion Hotel, IFSC, next Friday, May 21st, from 1pm to 5.30pm.
