A round-up of today's other stories in brief
Mexican lawyers win rights award
The 2010 human rights award of the Council of Bars and Law Societies of Europe has been granted to two Mexican lawyers who fought for eight years to win justice for the families of three young women raped and killed in Mexico in 2001.
In December 2009, David Peña Rodríguez and Karla Salas Ramírez obtained a condemnation of the Mexican state for its inaction in pursuing the perpetrators, in a ruling which also contributed to the recognition of a new category of crime, “femicide”.
The council represents about a million lawyers in Europe through their member bars and law societies.
Its human rights award, recognising lawyers worldwide who have contributed to the fight for human rights, was established in 2007.
Irish solicitor Geoffrey Shannon was shortlisted for his work in defending children’s rights.
