Convention centre hosts rights forum
The 11th Department of Foreign Affairs/NGO Forum on Human Rights will take place in the national convention centre, Dublin, this Friday.
The theme for this year’s forum is “Ireland’s examination under the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) mechanism of the United Nations Human Rights Council on 6 October 2011”.
The Universal Periodic Review involves the domestic human rights records of all 192 United Nations member states being reviewed every four years.
Ireland will be reviewed for the first time on October 6th, 2011, and this year’s forum will form part of the national consultation process.

European legal aid conference
At a conference of the Council of Bars and Law Societies of Europe (CCBE) and the Academy of European Law, 10 recommendations on legal aid were presented to EU institutions, asking them to deliver on what they have committed to in fundamental rights instruments.
The conference was opened by the vice-president of the European Commission responsible for justice, fundamental rights and citizenship, Viviane Reding.
Family lawyers' committee
An executive committee was elected by the Family Lawyers Association at their agm. Marion Campbell, solicitor, is chairwoman, Bronagh O'Hanlon SC is vice-chairwoman, Helen Ferguson, solicitor, is treasurer and Graham Toomey is honorary secretary.
Ken Murphy to head international body
Director general of the Law Society Ken Murphy has been elected to a two-year term as president of the International Institute of Law Association Chief Executives.
The institute is now in its 12th year.
It comprises chief executives of law societies and bar associations from more than 60 jurisdictions across the globe, which between them number more than one million lawyers.
