Roche to chair discussion on Lisbon Treaty
The Irish Society for European Law, in conjunction with the Institute of International and European Affairs, is holding a discussion on the Lisbon Treaty with Prof Gráinne de Búrca of Fordham University and Prof Brigid Laffan of UCD on Monday July 20th at 6pm.
It will be chaired by Minister for European Affairs Dick Roche and will be followed by the launch of the Irish Journal of European Law by Mr Justice Nial Fennelly, and by a dinner for members of the ISEL and the IIEA.

Mediation course for arbitrators
The Chartered Institute of Arbitrators’ Irish Branch will hold a mediation course in late September and early October for those wishing to become accredited mediators.

Bar Council exhibition
For the past two years, the Bar Council has been putting together an archive of photographs of legal events and people to document the history of the profession.
Donations have been made by judges, barristers and staff to the collection.
An exhibition of some of the many images opens tomorrow in the Bar Council offices, Law Library Distillery Building, 145 Church Street, Dublin 7.
The exhibition continues until the end of July.
State ratifies ECHR protocol
A new European Court of Human Rights protocol, which allows cases to be heard more quickly, has been ratified by Ireland.
The ratification has been welcomed by the Irish Human Rights Commission.
Dr Maurice Manning, president of the IHRC said: “The hope now is that the huge backlog that is currently threatening to undermine this court’s ability to effectively carry-out its functions can be addressed.”
Environmental law book
Dr Áine Ryall of the law faculty in UCC has just published a book on Effective Judicial Protection and the Environmental Impact Assessment Directive in Ireland.
The book deals with enforcement of the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) directive in Ireland and, by extension, in the European Union more widely.
Consisting of 332 pages, it is published in hardback and costs £45.
