Eamon Leahy memorial award launch

Minister for Social and Family Affairs Mary Hanafin will launch the Eamon Leahy Memorial Award in memory of her late husband this evening at 6pm in the Dining Hall of the Kings Inns.

Following the sudden death of Eamon Leahy SC in 2003, his colleagues in the Law Library initiated a fund so that a prize could be given to the top student in Criminal Law in the Diploma in Legal Studies at Kings Inns. Members of the bench and bar contributed to the fund.

Leahy was a leading criminal lawyer, and appeared in many of the biggest criminal cases in the State in the 1980s, 1990s and early years of this century, as well as contributing to the development of criminal law and the wider criminal justice system.

Competition law forum

The Irish Society for European Law is holding a competition law forum tomorrow, starting at 6.30pm, at the office of Mason Hayes+Curran Solicitors, Barrow Street, Dublin. The subject is “The European Commission Communication on its enforcement priorities in applying Article 82 of the EC Treaty to abusive exclusionary conduct.”

Human rights in Timor-Leste

Prof William Binchy of Trinity College Dublin has edited a book on the challenges for justice and human rights following a history of colonisation and occupation. Timor-Leste: Challenges for Justice and Human Rights in the Shadow of the Past, is published by Clarus Press at €99.

The book seeks to examine these issues from a broad interdisciplinary perspective.

Workshop on raising funds

William Fry and the Irish Software Association will host a breakfast workshop on company fundraisings on Thursday next at its office in Wilton Place, from 7.30-9.00am.

The workshop will be chaired by Myra Garrett, managing partner, William Fry. Speakers will include Pat Brazel, chief executive, Zignals, and Stephen Keogh, corporate finance partner at William Fry.

Mediation conference

The Irish Commercial Mediation Association Conference will take place on Friday next in Croke Park, where Mr Justice Peter Kelly will chair a panel discussion with professionals from Ireland and abroad.

The participants will look at how mediation can work across a wide range of business sectors.

The conference will also receive the results of a survey of attitudes towards commercial mediation.
