A loaded sawn-off shotgun and a quantity of ammunition have been recovered in a graveyard, gardai said.

It is suspected the gun was hidden by members of the Travelling community involved in a feud ahead of the annual blessing of the graves ceremony this Sunday.

A Garda spokesman said an examination of the scene is ongoing and no arrests have been made to date.

Cemetery Sunday in Tullamore is being planned as part of the Gathering 2013, with families of loved ones buried in the parish urged to come home to mark the event.

Security is expected to be stepped up in the area after the ammunition find.

A garden fete is also due to be held in the town after Mass on Sunday, with a street party planned after Saturday evening’s vigil.
