Niall Hewison charged after Edmund Rice found unconscious on street

The 54-year-old man was found unconscious on Lower Strand Street, Tramore

A 20-year-old man has been remanded on bail after he was charged following the death of a 54-year-old man in Co Waterford at the weekend.

Niall Hewison of Suncrest, Clarinwood, Tramore, was brought before Waterford District Court after a Garda investigation into the death of Edmund Rice, who was found unconscious on Lower Strand Street in the town at about 2.15am on Saturday. He was pronounced dead at University Hospital Waterford.

Mr Hewison, whom gardaí arrested at the scene, was charged with assault causing harm to Mr Rice. At a special sitting on Sunday Judge Gerard Furlong remanded Mr Hewison on bail to appear in court again on July 25th. The Garda asked for him to sign on three times a week at Tramore Garda Station, remain sober and surrender his passport.

Gardaí say a postmortem by Deputy State Pathologist Dr Linda Mulligan will determine the course of their investigation into Mr Rice’s death.
