Man arrested after car hijacking in Belfast

A 32-year-old man was arrested in south Belfast following a car hijacking last night.

The car was parked outside a supermarket in the Ormeau Road area at about 9.40pm when the hijacker got in the driver’s seat and pushed a man who was sitting in the passenger seat out.

The thief then drove away.

Police stopped the car a short time later in the Verner Street area and arrested a suspect. He remains in police custody.

The incident was unrelated to overnight disturbances in Belfast, in which eight PSNI officers were injured and eight people were arrested.
