A man has been arrested in connection with the hijacking of a taxi in Co Cork in the early hours of this morning.

The incident occurred at Lower Killeens in Blarney at about 1.30am.

The taxi driver, a man in his 70s, picked up two men at Dillon's Cross and was travelling towards Cork city when he was threatened and assaulted.

The driver was put out of the car at a service station on the Carrigohane Straight and then men took off in the vehicle.

The car was found crashed at Lower Killeens a short time later. A man in his 30s was arrested at the scene and is being held at Gurranbraher Garda station.

The second man managed to flee the area on foot.

The taxi driver received treatment at Cork University Hospital for a facial injury and was released a short time later.
