Sources indicated the two men had become involved in an altercation over a €100 drugs debt which the suspect had gone to collect from the dead man at the apartment.

They became involved in an argument and it is believed a breadknife was used to stab the victim several times in the legs and the chest.

He was later found in a car park area in the apartment complex.

He was taken to Beaumont Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

Both men are known to gardaí but neither is regarded as having a major role in criminal activity.

It is understood the dead man’s grandmother also died today.

It was unclear tonight as to whether the apartment in which the altercation took place was the deceased’s home.

Gardaí, an ambulance and fire engine all responded to the scene following reports of the incident this afternoon.

The area was sealed off for a forensic examination and the office of the State Pathologist was informed.

Anyone with information or who may have witnessed the incident is asked to contact Ballymun Garda station on (01) 666 4400, the confidential line at 1800 666 111 or any other station.
