Man dies following Mayo shooting

Attack happened at service station in Castlebar this afternoon

Gardaí are expected to launch a murder investigation following the fatal shooting of a 23-year-old man in Mayo this afternoon.

The incident took place at a service station on the Moneen Road in Castlebar at approximately 3.30pm today.

The victim was shot a number of times and was rushed to Mayo General Hospital for treatment. He died from his wounds this evening.

A post mortem examination is due to be carried out tomorrow morning at Mayo General Hospital by Deputy State Pathologist Dr Michael Curtis.

Gardai are particularly interested in tracing a dark coloured estate car which was seen leaving the area at time.

The scene has been cordoned off for technical examination.
