Man found with rifle arrested

Cork District Court denies bail

A man who was arrested after reportedly being seen running from a crashed vehicle with a rifle has been denied bail at a sitting of Cork District Court.

Don Duggan (27) of Ballinderry Park, Mayfield, was charged with carrying a rifle, three bullets and four shotgun cartridges without authorised use, contrary to the firearms Act.

Judge Aingeal Ní Chonduin also heard that Garda Denis Howard charged Mr Duggan with two counts of unlawfully using a vehicle without the owner’s consent at Glanmire and unlawfully taking possession of a vehicle at Thurles railway station. All the offences allegedly occurred last Wednesday.

Garda Howard said Mr Duggan was arrested at Spring Hill that day after he was found to be carrying a loaded rifle.

Garda Howard and Garda Helen Courtney were on duty at the time. They were informed about a crashed Pajero 4x4 and arrested Mr Duggan, who was observed running away from the vehicle. Garda Howard said it was his belief Mr Duggan had stolen a car in Thurles and had crashed it. He said it was the State’s contention that Mr Duggan came across a Pajero near Cashel and drove away in this vehicle, in which he later found a loaded rifle.
