Gardaí in Monaghan have arrested a man who pretended to be a garda so he could steal an elderly man's wallet.

The incident happened near Scotch Corner at about 4.45pm on Friday, when the pensioner was stopped by a jeep.

The occupant of the jeep was said to have impersonated a member of An Garda Síochána before stealing the wallet and fleeing the scene.

The jeep was later recovered in Castleshane, Co Monaghan, at which point gardaí recognised it as a stolen vehicle.
