Man remanded in custody over rape of woman in Dublin

A 31-year-old man has been charged with the rape of a woman with Down Syndrome.

A 31-year-old Pakistani national has been charged in connection with the rape of a woman in Dublin earlier this month.

The man appeared before Judge David McHugh at a sitting of the Dublin District Court today.

He is charged under Section 2 of the Criminal Law (Rape) Act.

The alleged assault took place on Wednesday June 12th in the South Circular Road area of the city.

The woman who is in her 20s was out walking and jogging with her mother.

Today, Judge McHugh placed reporting restrictions on the media.

In his evidence of arrest, charge and caution, Detective Inspector Sean Campbell told the court the accused was formally arrested and charged at Kevin St garda station at 4.15pm.

He made no response to the charge.

Bail was opposed by gardaí on the grounds that the defendant may be a flight risk. Judge McHugh remanded him in custody.

He is due to appear again at Cloverhill District Court on June 28th.
