The Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission (GSOC) is investigating a road traffic incident in Dublin city centre this morning in which a man in his 20s was seriously injured after his motorbike was in collision with a garda vehicle.

The incident occurred just before 5am at the junction of Buckingham St and Sean McDermott St in Dublin 1.

The motorbike and a Garda patrol car collided, resulting in serious damage to both vehicles.

The injured man was first taken to the nearby Mater Hospital before then being transferred to Beaumount Hospital.

A forensic examination has been undertaken at the scene.

The incident was referred to GSOC under section 102 of the Garda Síochána Act 2005, which is normal procedure when a death or serious harm has occurred following Garda contact.

A team of GSOC investigators has attended the scene and an investigation to establish the circumstances of the collision is being undertaken.

GSOC has issued an appeal for anyone who may have witnessed the collision, or who has information which may assist the investigation, to contact them on 1890 600 800.
