Motorcyclist killed in in Westmeath collision

Man in 20s dies in hospital after incident between Athlone and Mullingar

Gardaí have appealed for witnesses to a collision in which a motorcyclist was killed.

The incident occurred near Loughnavalley on the R390 between Athlone and Mullingar in Co Westmeath at approximately 4.30pm today.

The male driver of the motorcycle, aged in his 20s, was seriously injured following a collision with a van.

He was rushed to Mullingar Hospital but was later pronounced dead.

The driver of the van was also brought to hospital but his injuries were not thought to be life threatening.

The Dublin based coastguard helicopter was also scrambled to the scene although the deceased was eventually moved by ambulance.

Forensic collision investigators were last night examining the scene and the road was closed with diversions put in place.

Gardaí have issued an appeal for any witnesses to contact them and have asked in particular for anyone travelling on the R390 between 4pm and 4.30p to contact Mullingar station at (044) 9384 000 or on the confidential line at 1800 666 111.
