A murder investigation is underway following the death of a 39-year-old man in Limerick city.

Gardaí believe the victim, originally from Lithuania, suffered a violent death after a row broke out in a rented property off Wolfe Tone Street in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

A 55-year-old man, who had been living at the same address, was arrested at the scene at 9.30am.

He is being detained at Roxboro Garda station under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984, which means he can be held for 24 hours.

It is understood the victim, who was found in an upstairs room, suffered multiple injuries, possibly inflicted with a knife.

Gardaí discovered the man’s body shortly after 5.30am after they were called to the terraced house following reports of a disturbance at the property on Barrack Hill.

It is believed the men had been drinking when a dispute broke out.

The deputy state pathologist Dr Michael Curtis is conducting a post-mortem at University Hospital Limerick on the body of the man, who has not yet been named.

A Garda cordon remains around the house, while two other premises on St Patrick’s Road and Allandale in the city are also being preserved as part of the investigation.
