Off-duty garda disarms gunman during shop robbery

A man has appeared in court charged in connection with an armed robbery at a convenience store on Oxmantown Road, Dublin 7.

The robbery occured at lunchtime on Monday and an off-duty garda entered the shop while it was taking place.

He identified himself as a garda at which point the man (39) threatened him at gunpoint. The officer, a recent graduate from the training college in Templemore, confronted the raider, successfully disarmed him and continued to restrain him until local gardaí arrived.

A firearm was seized and will be forensically examined. A large kitchen knife was also recovered at the scene.

The arrested man was taken to Mountjoy Garda station. No injuries were reported.
