A new officer has been added to senior Garda management with the promotion of Orla McPartlin to the position of assistant commissioner.
She is one of a group of officers at the third most senior rank in the Garda, behind the commissioner and deputy commissioner posts.
Ms McPartlin won promotion through a competition run by the Policing Authority, which has assumed responsibility for filling some senior vacancies in the force.
She joined the Garda in 1983 and has served in various roles in the Dublin Metropolitan Region (DMR) and the Western and Northern regions. She has also served in liaison and protection, internal affairs, the professional standards unit and the Garda commissioner’s office in Garda Headquarters, Dublin.
Currently she is the divisional officer in the DMR Southern Division.
As well as Ms McPartlin’s appointment, the fourth made by the Policing Authority to the rank of assistant commissioner, six appointments have been made to the rank of superintendent.
They are: Declan O’Sullivan of Anglesea Street, Cork; Aidan Minnock of Athlone Garda District; Kevin Gately of the Galway Garda District; Michael McElgunn of the Intelligence Section in Security and Intelligence; Peter Mulryan of the Garda National Bureau of Criminal Investigation and Carmel Banville of the Waterford Garda Division.
