A pedestrian has died after he was knocked down by a car in Co Meath early this morning.

The man, who was in his 40s, was struck on Castle Street in Trim at about 12.50am.

He was pronounced dead at the scene and his body was taken to Our Lady’s Hospital in Navan.

A second man, who is in his 20s, was also hit by the car and was taken to Our Lady's Hospital Drogheda with serious injuries.

The driver of the car was not hurt in the incident.

This road was closed for a forensic examination and local diversions were put are in place.
