A six-year-old boy has been killed in a road crash in Northern Ireland.

The child was struck by a car in Newtownards, Co Down, at around 3.20pm on Wednesday.

The fatal collision happened on the Scrabo Road.

Police have appealed for anyone who witnessed the incident to come forward.

Meanwhile, a man in his 70s died after he was knocked down by a car while walking on the N2 in Co Monaghan.

Incident happened at 5.50pm at Killmarley, 3km south of Monaghan town. The man was pronounced dead at the scene and his body was taken to the morgue at Monaghan Hospital.

The male driver, who was the sole occupant of the car, was unhurt.

The road was closed for a forensic examination and diversions are in place.
