A male 16-year-old has been arrested over an alleged assault in Dublin which left the son of a well-known medical professor with ‘catastrophic’ injuries.

The 21-year-old victim suffered serious injuries to his face after an incident at the junction of Dame Lane and Trinity St shortly in Dublin city centre after 1am on Monday.

Prof Stephen Cusack, a professor in emergency medicine at University College Cork (UCC), took to social media on Wednesday to ask for help finding the person who had "catastrophically disfigured" his son in an attack.

Prof Cusack thanked people for their support online and also the Dublin Fire Brigade (DFB), staff at St James's Hospital and the plastic surgeon colleagues who had treated his son.
