Three men have been arrested by police investigating the attempted murder of a Northern Ireland police officer who was shot as he waited at traffic lights.

The victim had just left Dungannon Police Station, Co Tyrone, in November 2007 after finishing work and was stopped outside a church when a gunman opened fire, seriously injuring him.

The officer drove back to the station, where he crashed into the front gates, and received medical help from colleagues before being taken to hospital.

Three suspects, aged 36, 37 and 41, were detained in Co Antrim this morning and taken to Antrim Police Station for questioning.
